The Origin of Jumua

Exploring the Beginnings of the Friday Prayer in Islam

Reading time: 1 minute

He who performs his Wudu' perfectly and comes to Jumu'ah prayer and listens (to the Khutbah) silently, the sins which he has committed since the previous Friday plus three more days (i.e., 10 days) will be forgiven for him. One who distracts himself with pebbles during the Khutbah will not get the (Jumu'ah) reward".

One of our weekly events is the Friday Jumua Prayer. However, have you ever wondered about the origin of this age-old Islamic tradition?

Before Hijrah, among the early converts of Yathrib (soon to be called Madina), an individual singled out by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was assigned two crucial tasks – teaching others the Quran and leading them in Salah. His name was Musa’b ibn Umair (RA).

This initiative led to a sudden swell in Muslim converts, with approximately 40 people embracing Islam within a few weeks. The thriving congregation then prompted Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to establish the Jumu-ah Salah.

You may find it surprising to learn that the very first Friday prayer in Islam's history was not led by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ but commanded by him.

Due to probable persecution and even potential death threats, ‘Jumua’ or any time of worship was commenced discreetly away from Makkah’s public dominion.

The first Jumua prayer took place in Madina in the house of an Ansar, As’ad Ibn Zurarah (RA).

The essence of Jumua lies in gathering believers to remember Allah, irrespective of the numbers collectively.

It is a weekly event that strengthens the bonds of the Muslim community and reminds us of the importance of unity and worship in Islam.

The Jumua prayer is a time for communal worship, a moment to reflect on one's faith, and a time to recommit to our principles.

As we reflect on Jumua's historical origins, it is essential to remember the spirit of unity and devotion that it embodies.

The Jumua prayer is a testament to the resilience and dedication of the early Muslims, who continued to uphold and spread the message of Islam despite the challenges and threats they faced.
