Why Everyone Thought They Were His Favorite

Connection in the Sunnah

Reading time: 2 minutes

The greatest miracle of the Prophet ﷺ, after the Qur’an, was his character.

Shaykh Mendes

In a world starved for authentic connection, let us pause to reflect on one of the greatest miracles of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: his unparalleled ability to make every soul feel valued.

Take the story of Amr ibn al-As, a companion who once returned with a pressing question from a mission.

“O Messenger of Allah,” he asked, “who is the most beloved person to you?”

Without hesitation, the Prophet ﷺ replied, “Aisha.”

Amr pressed further. “And among the men?”

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Her father.”

Persisting, Amr asked again, “Then who?” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Umar.”

At this, Amr stopped out of fear he would never be mentioned.

What stands out is that Amr genuinely believed he might be the most beloved.

He wasn’t alone in this feeling—all the companions felt they held a uniquely special place in the Prophet’s ﷺ heart.

How extraordinary is this?

A leader of tens of thousands, yet every individual felt seen, heard, and cherished in his presence.

2. Compassion That Changed the World

The secret to this profound connection wasn’t just charisma but a heart deeply attuned to others' needs.

The Prophet ﷺ met every person where they were.

He adapted to their dialects, understood their struggles, and honored their individuality.

Whether it was a child seeking comfort, a marginalized person yearning for dignity, or a companion needing encouragement, the Prophet ﷺ provided what they needed most: sincere attention and compassion.

This wasn’t limited to grand gestures.

Simple acts—a smile, a kind word, or a moment of eye contact—affirmed their humanity.

Imagine what it must have felt like to receive that kind of attention from someone so beloved by everyone.

And it wasn’t just the companions who were transformed.

Entire communities were elevated by this prophetic model of excellence.

His compassion was a force that reshaped not only hearts but the course of history itself.

3. A Model for Us to Follow

In a time where division and indifference often prevail, we must ask ourselves: How can we emulate even a fraction of this incredible character?

How often do we make others feel truly seen and heard?

How often do we extend kindness—not just as a formality but as a genuine act of connection?

Let us strive to meet people where they are, offering them what they need most: our presence, attention, and sincerity.

Even the simplest gestures—a warm smile, an intentional conversation, a moment of genuine care—can make someone feel like they matter.

Reflection:

Has someone ever made you feel understood, even in a brief encounter?

How did that moment impact you, and how can you learn to bring that same warmth to others?
