The Power of Dhikr
A Nightly Ritual for Better Sleep
Reading Time: 2 min
Recite Qur’an and Dhikr before going to bed.
The ancient practice of dhikr, or remembrance of Allah (swt), emerges as a beacon of tranquility. It offers profound spiritual solace and neurological benefits that can significantly enhance our sleep quality.
Prophetic Guidance on Nightly Supplications:
Ayatul Kursi and Surah Al-Baqarah: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ often recited Ayat-ul-Kursi and the concluding verses of Surah Al-Baqarah before sleep. These verses, imbued with deep meaning, serve as reminders of Allah (swt)'s omnipotence, mercy, and the fleeting nature of our earthly existence.
Surah Al Mulk: A nightly recitation of Surah Al Mulk is believed to intercede for the believer, ensuring their sins are forgiven on Judgment Day. Numerous hadiths underscore its significance, urging us to integrate it into our nightly routine.
Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar: Emulating the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, recite these praises thirty three times each night.
Neurological Benefits of Dhikr:
Activating the Parasympathetic Nervous System: Dhikr aids in transitioning the body from the stress-induced "fight or flight" mode to the calming "rest and digest" state, setting the stage for a restful night.
Lowering Cortisol Levels: The rhythmic repetition of dhikr can reduce cortisol, the stress hormone, preparing our minds and bodies for rejuvenating sleep.
Promoting Theta Brainwaves: Similar to deep meditation, dhikr can enhance theta brainwave activity, which is linked to relaxation and reduced anxiety.
Incorporating dhikr into our night routine is an invitation to deepen our connection with Allah (swt). As we navigate an era dominated by sleep aids and screen time, it's time to anchor ourselves in the timeless rhythms of dhikr, reaping its spiritual and neurological rewards.
Jazakumu Allahu Khayran for being a part of this journey with us.
