The Second Spiritual Fire

The Day of Judgement

Reading time: 2 minutes

On this Day We will seal their mouths, their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify to what they used to commit.

As we continue reflecting on the afterlife, we now turn to the most important day in every person’s life.

The Day of Judgment is when the reality of our deeds will be revealed in ways we can barely comprehend.

The most terrifying aspects of that day are the agonizing wait and the humiliating exposure.

Awaiting our Judgement

Imagine waiting for your judgment, aware of your wrongdoings, unsure whether you’ll be punished or forgiven.

It’s the feeling you get when you know you’ve done something wrong at school or work.

You’re called into the office to speak with the person in charge.

The waiting is the worst part—the uncertainty, the way your mind races through all the possible consequences, and the growing panic.

You may even wish to be punished right away to end the torment of waiting.

Now multiply that feeling, knowing your entire eternity rests on this decision.

For those who have wronged their souls, the Day of Judgment will feel agonizingly long because their stress and fear will stretch time itself, making every moment heavier.

The Betrayal of Our Own Bodies

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned us that on the Day of Judgment, a person may stand before Allah confident in their actions.

They will say, "I believed in You, I prayed, I fasted, I gave charity."

But Allah will respond, “Enough. Now, we will bring the witnesses against you.”

The person will ask, "Who will testify against me?"

Allah will seal their mouth, and their limbs will begin to testify.

The hands that committed sins will speak.

The feet that walked towards disobedience will bear witness.

The skin will reveal every hidden moment of shame.

Did we do it for Allah or for the praise of people?

If we did our actions for others, we will be told to call them and see what they can offer us.

On that day, everything we thought was hidden will come to light.

The world around us has been silent about our deeds, but now the veils are lifted.

Our bodies, all we possess, and everything we ever interacted with will testify.

When Our Possessions and the World Speak

It’s not just your limbs that speak but everything you thought you owned.

The places you visited, the things you touched, and the wealth you hoarded will all bear witness.

Even the animals we interacted with and those we consumed will bear witness.

Remember the Camel that complained to the Prophet ﷺ, a complaint that only he could hear?

On the Day of Judgment, those interactions, those forgotten moments, come alive.

Your devices, homes, and even the ground you walked upon will testify either for or against you.

The weight of every moment becomes heavier when you realize that nothing is hidden and everything inanimate and alive is bearing witness.

If Allah is going to make the environment and the animals testify for or against us, imagine the weight of the testimony of people we encounter when they are brought forth to bear witness for or against us.

Spiritual Realities: The Backbiter’s Agony

Imagine someone serving you a meal.

You think it’s delicious and gladly eat it all, only for them to tell you afterward, “Do you not feel ashamed? You’re eating the corpse of your brother.”

You look over to the kitchen to see a half-rotten corpse lying on the table and look back at your plate to realize that’s what you have been eating.

You would feel disgusted, humiliated, and full of rage and regret.

Even though you were done eating, the absolute repulsion and sickness of the act would remain with you.

Now imagine everyone knows that you’ve willingly done such an act.

This humiliation and self-loathing would increase drastically.

This is the reality of the backbiter in the Hereafter.

The sins we deem insignificant becomes the source of agony, shame, and regret.

Apply this understanding to every action that the Sacred Law has forbidden.

These prohibitions exist because of the appalling spiritual realities underlying those actions.

What may seem appealing to the outward eye is, in truth, detestable to the inner sight illuminated by the Light of Allah.

The Unseen Realities of Our Deeds

One night, in a vision, Prophet Isa (AS) saw a lovely woman draped in fine clothes, adorned with jewels, and surrounded by a mesmerizing fragrance.

But as he drew closer, her beauty withered away, revealing an old woman covered in boils and sores, her teeth missing, and a foul stench emanating from her.

Seeing Isa’s (AS) shock, she said, "Do not look so surprised. I have been adored and loved by many."

Isa (AS) asked, "Where are all those who adored you now?"

With a smile, she replied, "I left them. Each more destitute and miserable than they had ever been before."

Isa (AS) then asked, "Who are you?"

Her grin widened as she said, "Don’t you know already?

I am Dunya.’”

And yet, how many of us spent our lives chasing after her?

The Mercy of Allah

The Prophet ﷺ told us that Allah sent down just one portion of His mercy to this world and that mercy inspires the love we experience between parents, spouses, and children and all the kindness we see throughout history.

The remaining 99 parts of His mercy are reserved for the Day of Judgment.

So, while these are natural consequences we’ll face, do not despair—we pray for Allah’s mercy and love to envelop us.

We also don’t want to be deluded; we are still responsible for our choices.

These realities remind us to seek balance and hope in Allah’s mercy, strive for good, and be accountable for our actions.

Reflection:

Reflect on the transient nature of this world.

This isn't to induce fear but to foster perspective. Remembering death helps prioritize what truly matters.
