Unlocking Barakah

Embracing Routine

Reading time: 2 minutes

O son of Adam, you are nothing but a collection of days; whenever a day passes, a part of you passes away.

Hasan al-Basri

Time often feels like sand slipping through our fingers in our fast-paced world.

We wake up inundated with choices and distractions:

This constant decision-making exhausts us before the day even begins, pulling us away from the stillness and purpose our souls deeply crave.

But there is a path illuminated by our rich Islamic tradition that can help infuse our lives with meaning and unlock the Barakah (blessing) in our time.

The Power of Routine

When actions are performed consistently with sincerity and mindfulness, routine transcends into something sacred.

The regularity—the daily cadence—creates profound and meaningful experiences. Our bodies find ease in familiar practices, allowing our minds to relax into deeper contemplation.

This harmony between body and soul opens the door to increased productivity and spiritual fulfillment.

Consider the lives of the greatest figures in our history—the Prophets, the Sahaba, and the righteous leaders who came after them.

Who accomplished more than our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ or his rightly guided Caliphs?

Their days were structured, their routines purposeful, and their devotion unwavering. In their disciplined lives, we find the proof of Barakah manifesting as remarkable achievements that changed the course of history.

The Prophet ﷺ had a balanced and structured daily routine that maximized both his spiritual and worldly responsibilities.

He dedicated portions of his day to worship, community affairs, family, and rest.

His mornings began before dawn, when he engaged in Tahajjud prayer, supplicating to Allah in the stillness of the night.

After Fajr prayer, he would remain in his place, remembering Allah until sunrise.

This practice enriched his spiritual state and set a tranquil and purposeful tone for the rest of the day.

Morning Practices: The Gateway to Productivity

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"O Allah, bless my nation in their early mornings."

Rising early and utilizing the time after Fajr brings immense benefits.

Those who embrace this practice often find the morning hours most productive and spiritually uplifting.

The quiet of the early hours allows uninterrupted focus, whether in worship, study, or work.

Sleeping after Fajr, known as the "remorseful sleep" in our tradition,” often leads to missed opportunities and a sense of the day slipping away.

By staying awake, we honor the Sunnah and tap into a time blessed with divine favor.

Consistent Qur'an Recitation: Filling Time with Blessings

One of the great scholars, Ibrahim ibn Adham, was asked by a student, "How can I benefit more from my time?" He replied:

"Read more Qur'an. The more Qur'an you read, the more Barakah will be in your time."

Regular engagement with the Qur'an fills our time with blessings and our hearts with peace.

It sharpens the mind, soothes the soul, and clarifies our purpose.

Simplifying Choices to Enhance Focus

We free ourselves from decision fatigue by simplifying our lives and limiting unnecessary choices.

The mind finds stillness When the body engages in familiar, purposeful actions.

This clarity allows us to immerse deeply in our activities, making each moment meaningful.

The Prophet ﷺ emphasized simplicity and intentionality in all aspects of life.

His minimalism in personal affairs left him free to focus on matters of great significance.

By emulating this approach, we conserve mental energy for what truly matters—our relationship with Allah and our contributions to the world.
