Shaykh Ubaydullah Evans had an intriguing encounter while traveling with a shaykh from Morocco in LA. They were approached by a French man, clearly intrigued by their traditional attire. With a pronounced French accent, he eagerly asked about the "designer" of their clothes, mistaking them for a new fashion trend.
The shaykhs looked at each other and replied in unison, ”Sunnah”. 😂
The man's genuine astonishment revealed a common misconception: the tendency to view clothing merely as a fashion statement, devoid of deeper significance.
But Islamic attire is not just about aesthetics.
It's a heartfelt expression of faith, a testament to one's commitment to the teachings and traditions of Islam.
Whether one chooses a jubba and an imam or a contemporary jacket and tie, it's the intention and alignment with one's faith that truly matter.
However, our commitment to Islam shouldn't be gauged solely by our clothing choices.
The essence of the sunnah lies in our actions, values, and interactions. Tolerance, respect, and non-judgment, core tenets of Islam, should be woven into the fabric of our daily lives.
As we appreciate and respect diverse cultures, it's essential that we advocate for the same understanding and acceptance of our own traditions.
Mutual respect should be the cornerstone of our interactions, transcending religious and cultural boundaries.
Let's be ambassadors of the sunnah, in both attire and action, paving the way for a more inclusive world.
