A Story of Redemption
When Compassion Transcends Judgment
Reading time: 2 minutes
Whoever saves a life, it will be as if they saved all of humanity
Mohammad Sohail was closing his Long Island convenience store one evening when a man burst in, wielding a baseball bat and demanding money.
In that tense moment, Sohail reached under the counter, retrieved his unloaded gun, and pointed it at the man.
The would-be robber immediately dropped the bat, fell to his knees, and pleaded,
"Please, don’t shoot me. I have no money, no food. My family is starving. I didn’t know what else to do."
Instead of escalating the situation, Sohail listened as the man confessed his desperate circumstances.
Here was a man driven to crime by hardship, someone society might be quick to condemn.
Yet Sohail lowered his weapon.
He asked the man to promise never to resort to robbery again, and when the man agreed, he handed him $40 and a bag filled with groceries.
"Why are you doing this?" the man asked, astonished.
"After what I just did... how can you be so kind?"
Sohail replied, "I’m a Muslim. This is what my faith teaches me—to show mercy and help those in need."
Moved by Sohail's kindness, the man expressed a desire to embrace Islam.
Sohail then guided him through the Shahada, assuring him that his past sins were forgiven and inviting him to stay in touch for guidance or support.
After that encounter, Sohail never saw the man again.
Six months later, Sohail received an envelope. Inside was $60 and a typed letter from the man, who wrote:
"You changed my life. At the time, I had no money, no food, and nothing to provide for my family.
I know what I did was wrong, but I felt I had no choice.
When you held that gun to my head, I thought I was going to die.
Instead, you showed me kindness I didn’t deserve and gave me hope.
I converted to Islam, just as I promised I would.
I found a mosque and a community that helped me get back on my feet.
I’m now working as a carpenter, and my family is well.
I’ll never forget you.
You saved me from a dark path and gave me a new beginning.
Thank you."
The letter came with an accompanying photo—a smiling man in traditional Islamic attire with his wife and two young children
True da’wah is not only about preaching but about our actions and character.
Many times, those who society is quick to judge or punish are, in fact, the ones who need kindness and love the most.
Islam has always been a remedy for the downtrodden, welcoming those who have been shunned.
As we reflect on this account, let it inspire us to act compassionately and mercifully.
Our actions can light the way for others, however small they seem.
Reflection:
Can you recall a moment when an act of kindness transformed a situation in your life?

🤲 Make Du’a for Faruq 🤲
﷽
Ya Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate, grant Faruq complete shifa and restore his health. Ease his chest pain and protect him from all illness and harm.
Oh Allah, help him with his immigration struggles. Make the process smooth, remove all obstacles, and grant him peace of mind. Keep his family safe, prosperous, and well, filling their lives with Your blessings.
Grant Faruq abundant halal rizq with barakah, and fill his heart and home with contentment, ease, and gratitude. Shower Your mercy upon him and his family in this life and the Hereafter.
Ameen.🤲🏽
