7 Steps Towards Healthy Islamic Habits
Reading time: 2 minutes
A special thank you to:
Allah says “If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than they; and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.”
Discipline is a key attribute.
Consistency and regularity are essential from our daily prayers performed five times daily to the Zakat that we must calculate annually.
These practices cultivate a discipline that becomes a part of us, as we are creatures of habit.
Our bodies grow accustomed to the routines we introduce.
Over time, these small, consistent actions shape us into disciplined individuals who have control over their habits, even when they are harmful.
We all grapple with such habits, whether it's a harmful addiction, procrastination, or frequent negative thoughts.
Eliminating bad habits is not a smooth journey; it requires willpower, conviction, and strength.
But it is not an impossible task.
Regardless of how ingrained a habit might be, we can overcome it with determination and guidance.
The first step is to identify the origin of the bad habit. A change in environment can greatly improve the consistency of a habit and help avoid bad ones.
Next, replace bad habits with good ones. Ensuring our time is well spent, either physically or online, aids in controlling the tempter-like pull towards the quick gratification some bad habits might offer.
Our lives are fleeting.
Let’s not waste our precious days being swallowed up by habits that ultimately bring harm.
Remember, we strive for discipline because it gives us a purposeful, content, and harmonious life.
We are not promised tomorrow, so let’s make today the day we begin to repel bad habits and welcome more fulfilling ones.
With Ramadan approaching, we can conquer harmful habits and pave the way to a life of discipline, contentment, and peace.
So, how can I implement a new habit?
Let’s use the example of implementing daily Qur'an reading:
Make it obvious: Keep the Qur’an and other items of religious significance visible around the home as a constant reminder to read or pray.
Implementation intention: Schedule reading around other foundational habits like Salah or breakfast.
Make it attractive: Pair a habit you need to do with the one you want, like lighting your favorite candle when you read the Qur'an.
Community engagement: Participating in collective practices can instill enthusiasm and encourage applying these habits, making the practice more enjoyable. Have a weekly gathering or a group chat where we hold ourselves accountable to keep the habit consistent.
Make it easy: Keep a clean, quiet space ready for prayer to avoid procrastination. Start by reading just one or two verses daily and then gradually increasing.
Make it satisfying: Give yourself a small reward after reading the Qur’an, like making a cup of chai after finishing your daily goal. Habit tracking or keeping a log of your progress provides visual proof of progress, which can be very satisfying and motivating.
Belief and identity change: Embrace a Muslim identity and visualize ourselves as devout Muslims. This firm identity can reinforce the daily habits we aspire to maintain.
[BONUS] Make it a goal: We’re offering a Qu’ran tracing workbook for anyone who signs up for the Ramadan Challenge. It’s an excellent way to track progress and stay intentional with your Qu’ran reading.
Remember, persistent small changes lead to remarkable results over time.
Success with these habits is about consistency and gradual improvement.
Start small, remain patient, and gradually build up your habits aligning with your faith.
It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
We can do it, InshaAllah!
